School-Based Counseling

School-Based Counseling through Psychology and Learning Center

Psychology and Learning Center partners with numerous school districts in Beaver County to provide counseling services for children at the district within of the school buildings just as if we were seeing these children at our facility.  School-based counseling services offer numerous advantages for the child and parent including cutting out trips to an outpatient office after school, taking time off of work for appointments, and offering to see a child for counseling in an environment (school) where they already feel comfortable.

Counseling services help teach a child various skills to manage difficulties in their life. These may include trouble with anxiety, social skills, grief and loss, and behavioral problems. Our goal is to help your child think and feel their best.

Our Process (for our current district partners)

  1. Referral
    • Complete, sign, and return one of our referral forms to your child’s school, and the school will then fax the form directly to Psychology and Learning Center. Insurance information is necessary, as your health insurance will be billed for school-based counseling services.
  2. Intake
    • This is to ensure that we are able to collect all consents to treatment and insurance information prior to initiating services with your child at school. Intakes are completed with one of our psychologists at our facility. At this initial meeting, the psychologist will review your child’s history and help to determine the best course of treatment. Most often, this will include school-based counseling, which can begin soon after the intake is completed. Other potential treatment options may include evaluation for conditions such as ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder, potential medication consultation, and more intense levels of care, such as a prescription for in-home services (such as Family Based Mental Health Services) through other agencies.
  3. Regular Contact
    • If school-based counseling services are agreed upon, a counselor at Psychology and Learning Center will then meet with your child in school on a regular basis depending on his/her needs—usually, this is weekly or bi-weekly. Parents can expect regular communication from the counselor regarding your child’s progress and their goals.
  4. Length of Treatment
    • Counseling services typically end when concerns that prompted the start of treatment become manageable. However, parents may discontinue treatment at any time. Patient balances (per insurance company) must also continue to be satisfied in order for services to continue.
